October 2013 - Cutting Firewood

Jim and I loaded up the Polaris and took it to the lodge last weekend to use for carrying firewood up the hill.  We have been cutting down about 8 of the dead cedar trees (we have over 40 dead trees due to the beetle blight) with logs of up to 24 inches that needed to be hauled up the hill and split for use this winter.

Though we tried to get the trailer ready for hauling Friday night - by midnight we figured out that we would not leave until Saturday morning.  Jim had the heavy plywood on - but we still needed to add all the tie downs and light kit and figure out how to get the Polaris on the trailer without having a good set of ramps - we used heavy duty plywood in the end.

When we arrived at the lodge on Saturday, the first order of business was to haul up wood we had cut 2 weeks earlier.  Jim took the Polaris down the school rode, through the gate, over the creek and onto the lawn area so that we could load up oak and cedar.

Then, once that pile was up in the front, we started cutting down additional dead cedars in the back of the property.  To get to those cedars, Jim and I had to cut a trail through the woods and down the hill quite a ways.  We used machetes, loppers and the chainsaw to clear small trees and brush.  We also had to move some rocks that were in the way of the path.  All in all, only took about 2 hours to get down to the bottom.

We used the rest of Saturday to cut down about 8 trees, cut them up and pile up the debris.  Sunday, we hauled the rest of the wood up the hill and spent the day splitting and stacking wood (we rented the log splitter from Hills).

We now have enough firewood for a heavy winter.  No need to buy any!

We saw Art and one of his friends on Saturday and another neighbor stopped by on Sunday for bit.  Overall a pretty busy weekend - with no time to complete the barbeque hut or work on the sauna.

  1. I used to live here at this place is a kid back in the early 80's I think it was 1984 286 it was a wonderful place to live I stop by today as I am a over the road truck driver and took pictures and reminiscing over the old times in the memories that I have the old place. I remember racing down the fire escape as a kid and I also remember one time we built a sled run from the railroad trestle up top down to come across the old outdoor freezer my brothers were sitting down talking to a highway patrolman as I was like 6 years old I come down barreling through the snow sled ramp that we had built and landed across the top of a highway patrol Cruiser.if I remember correctly I was close to getting that gentleman a complete heart attack.my brother Joe and two other girls were the graduating class of 1984 or 1985 from the emigrant gap elementary school I remember we used to go up to boreal once a week if we got all of our school work done and in good rapport we would go up to boreal and go skiing for free.I also remember as a kid when they were logging when logging was in a boom then we would get moms big salad sandwiches donuts and coffee and sell them to the loggers on their way out to go to the mill.there was an old man and if I remember correctly we called him longer dick he had one arm and it was such an amazing feat for a man with one arm to shift a four by four browning which is two sticks in one truck hauling logs at a blue Canyon going to the mill he was my buddy and he gave me an old red Miller logging flag that came off of the back of his truck.I have heard from some people that called us the rowdy bunch that we would rent rooms out for $35 a night to some of the local workers and provide them breakfast and coffee and even a good conversation and I also remember a payphone was our only ways of communication going down the hallway on the left side towards my mom and dads bedroom.my name is jason snyder and I'll stop there numerous times over the last probably 10-12 years and you guys have definitely made one heck of an improvement the place still looks the same but yet it also looks a lot newer and better taken care of then I have ever seen it yet.I am going to go ahead and throw this out there in figure that its okay but my telephone number is area code 559 765 1886 so if you guys ever have an opportunity during the summer months please let me know when you guys will be in so I could stop by and I would absolutely adore to be able to come inside and be able to take a walk around the property without trespassing and take some pictures and have a conversation of the old place thank you so very much God bless you and you definitely have one heck of a jewel.my email if you feel that you would like to contact me that way is firefighterjake93602@gmail.com.
